From retirement to Suesstudio: my artistic journey

Hi, I'm Sue! A watercolour, ink, coloured pencil  and pastel artist from Hull, United Kingdom. My Art journey began from an early childhood dream to creating art after retirement, and the joy I find in every brushstroke.

My love of art has always been with me. Sadly, I wasn't in the financial position to go to Art Colege when I left school and began working at a local Supermarket; working on check outs then as a Delicatessen Manager.

I married in 1988 and this was followed by having two children, and then training as a nursery nurse and classroom assistant. Workingin school helped me to fit child care around the children. In 2003, my husband and I divorced. I then decided to take the plunge and go part time at University to gain my teaching qualification.

I began primary school teaching in 2007 working at a school in Hull - with very little time to do any art!

Happy times mixed with some very stressful episodes during my primary teaching, but I was happy to be the subject Lead in Art acrosstheschool!

In 2017, I suffered a knockback to my health when diagnosed with breast cancer. Following successful treatment, I returned part time to teaching, but I'd lost that drive and was needing more 'me' time ..to just do what I enjoyed doing.

Grandchildren came along in 2018, 2021 and enjoying my spare time looking after them, it made me finally decide to retire. In 2023, age 60, I retired from teaching - with one goal...to take up my art hobby and find the time to enjoy it.

I found the perfect opportunity to attend a friendly little art group once a week. It’s a wonderful space where we share ideas, offer support, and enjoy a good chat over a cuppa, all guided by a lovely lady with no pressure. This environment allowed me more time to explore my skills, ideas, and techniques. I began showcasing my work in a simple form on social media, and thanks to my son, who connected me with an art gallery in Yorkshire and I now have a wide selection of prints, artwork, cards, and bookmarks available to buy in the gallery shop.

Most of my creating takes place at the old wooden dining table! While I have done artwork whilst on holiday, both locally and abroad, I find that I can easily be distracted in different surroundings. The comfort of my home studio, usually my dining table, allows me to truly focus and bring my visions to life.

What kind of connection do I want people to feel with my artwork? Self-belief is the key! If I can follow my childhood dream, then you can too. Through my pieces, I aim to convey a sense of hope, possibility, and the power of pursuing one's passions, no matter when you start.

Exciting New Addition: My Drawing Table!

No more drawing and painting at the dining table! My new drawing table has arrived and I love it! This dedicated space for my creative projects not only clears up the dining area but also inspires me to dive into my artistic endeavours with even more enthusiasm. The perfect height, sturdy surface, and ample storage have transformed how I approach my art. I can finally spread out my materials without worrying about clutter or mess. It’s a fantastic upgrade for my creativity, and I can’t wait to see what I’ll create next!
